چکیده

Introduction Sweetpotato breeders strive to develop varieties that address productivity challenges farmers face in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, adoption of these is low, partly attributed limited attention attributes desired by the end-users. Methods This study sought identify key traits preferred eight women processors and 426 consumers (180 male, 246 female) Manhiça, Marracuene Maputo districts, Mozambique. Processing diagnostics consumer studies evaluated two local (‘Lilas’, ‘N’santimuni’) improved (‘Alisha’, ‘Irene’). Data from were analyzed using content analysis summary statistics. Consumer hedonic data clustering regression models, while Penalty Multiple correspondence performed for Just-about-right Check-all-that-apply tests respectively. Results Processors prioritized mealiness, sweet taste, not fibrous, good sweetpotato smell, ease peeling, easy cook appearance boiled root. ‘N’santimuni’ was most variety processing. Consumers ‘Lilas’ because their high dry matter, pleasant firmness hand, smoothness when eating taste. ‘Alisha’ ‘Irene’ penalized low scores on sweetness, firmness. Women consumed more frequently than men had better discernment homogeneity colour. Also, youth educated disliked adults lower income consumers. Discussion strongly indicated preference importance quality such as sweetpotato. are rarely included breeding designs. Breeding programs can thus be enhanced biophysical chemical parameters will enable quantification incorporation attributes.

Genetic Variability for Tuber Yield, Quality, and Virus Disease Complex Traits in Uganda Sweetpotato Germplasm

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) is an important root crop in Uganda, where yield potential and quality attributes have not been fully exploited due to limited breeding efforts and poor knowledge on the inheritance of some of its agronomic traits. A study was carried out at Makerere University to phenotypically characterise selected sweetpotato cultivars with special reference to sweet potato viru...

Improvement for agronomically important traits by gene engineering in sweetpotato

Sweetpotato is the seventh most important food crop in the world. It is mainly used for human food, animal feed, and for manufacturing starch and alcohol. This crop, a highly heterozygous, generally self-incompatible, outcrossing polyploidy, poses numerous challenges for the conventional breeding. Its productivity and quality are often limited by abiotic and biotic stresses. Gene engineering ha...

Breeding for nutritive quality

Whilst herbage grasses and legumes are grown primarily to provide digestible energy and other nutrients for farm livestock, plant breeders have tended to concentrate on total or seasonal yield of DM, i.e. on the maximum fixation of energy by the crop, with any assessment of its nutritive value being left to a later stage of evaluation. In terms of providing the maximum amount of utilizable ener...

Recent progress in sweetpotato breeding and cultivars for diverse applications in Japan

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is an outcrossing hexaploid that is cultivated in the tropics and warm-temperate regions of the world. Sweetpotato has played an important role as a famine-relief crop during its long history and has recently been reevaluated as a health-promoting food. In Japan, sweetpotato is used for a wide range of applications, such as table use, processed foods, and...

Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy predictions as indicator traits in breeding programs for enhanced beef quality.

The aims of this study were 1) to investigate the potential application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict beef quality (BQ) traits, 2) to assess genetic variations of BQ measures and their predictions obtained by NIRS, and 3) to infer the genetic relationship between measures of BQ and their predictions. Young Piedmontese bulls (n = 1,230) were raised and fattened on 124 farms and...
